Wireless communication helps to develop occupational safety, says CEO Jorma Ollila

CEO of Nokia Corporation Jorma Ollila stated in his speech, that mobile phones and wireless communication can significantly help to develop occupational safety also in the construction industry. Mr. Ollila gave his lecture at the seminar organized by Oskari Vilamo –trust.

Within the EU, there are more than 13 million people that work in the construction industry. “The health and occupational safety statistics in this industry are somewhat darker than the average statistics. Every year approximately 1300 people in the EU lose their lives within this industry. Therefore it is essential to develop practises and services to lower the number of accidents and deaths” said Mr. Ollila. Mr. Ollila gave an example of Intelligent SMS -service, developed by BookIT ltd. for Skanska Construction Company. By using this Intelligent SMS –service, Skanska was cost-efficiently able to increase the number of safety inspections and observation in the construction sites.

“By sending MMS –pictures of potential occupational safety risks and observations to relevant people, the amount of time to fix the problem can significantly be reduced. These sorts of measures and services are important when we want to prevent and reduce the number of accidents. Wireless services are also used on other occasions at construction sites when messages etc. must be confirmed immediately and reliably, said Mr. Ollila in his speech at the seminar.
