BOOKIT LTD AND ELISA IMPLEMENT A HANDY MOBILE PHONE-ENABLED CHECK-IN
SERVICE FOR FINNAIR

Elisa Corporation, Press release 13 September 2004

Finnair is the first one in the world to adopt a mobile phone service, based on a Finnish invention, that enables passengers to check-in in advance for flights with a text message – in a taxi on the way to the airport, for instance.  Finnair's new text message check-in service is the first text message-based service in the world to function on all mobile operator connections - easily and without additional phone settings.

"In processing the service for Finnair we focused on information security and user friendliness. The service operates on a one-button principle – it identifies the user automatically without passwords or codes. Using the service is so simple that even operating instructions are unnecessary," says CEO Jukka Salonen, Bookit Ltd.

Elisa Corporation, the National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes), the Foundation for Finnish Inventors and Nokia Forum have also participated in developing the service, which is based on Bookit Ltd's internationally patented DDM technology (Dynamic Dialog Matrix). Elisa has configured its own telecommunication services to utilise DDM technology, and the company sells Bookit's DDM solution to business customers. Aerosystems Oy, a joint venture between IBM and Finnair, has integrated the service into Finnair's systems.

"We believe that solutions based on DDM technology will spread rapidly to other utility applications because using DDM text messages is extremely easy for consumers. The use of DDM also means immediate cost savings for service providers because Elisa delivers the solution as a service and no additional equipment investments are required from service providers," says Service Director Timo Rajala at Elisa.

DDM technology is compatible with any application that involves communicating with people on the move. Using the DDM service is based on simple questions to which the user answers 'yes' or 'no' on a push of a button. Elisa and Bookit have already used DDM technology for managing field workers in construction sites by using a system equipped with a camera phone.

"Taking care of the check-in via a text message is a good example of how mobile communication supports the development of corporate business processes. We believe that similar solutions will experience robust growth in different sectors in the near future. The banking sector, for example, has been interested in opportunities offered by DDM technology," states Senior Vice President Matti Tossavainen at Elisa.

"Finnair's SMS check-in service is a great example of an enterprise solution that can quickly obtain high user base because of its simplicity and ease of use," said Jukka Jyränoja from Nokia. "Increasing number of companies are realizing how mobile solutions can create competitive advantage by improving customer service and experience."

"Our present target group is large companies. For them, two-way DDM services offer a good opportunity to provide enhanced customer service," says Jukka Salonen at Bookit Ltd.
